Kelindan is a modular typeface family inspired by Indonesian embroidery as repetition and difference.
Kelindan’s family consists of Tight, Moderate, Loose. Alike thread tensions. The three variations of Kelindan are developed from a single base motif deconstructed into circular modules. The modules explore how shapes can shift and relate to one another through variation and transformation. Each variation is paired with a different stitch pattern that reflects the progression of embroidery technique. From hand embroidery to machine embroidery and computerized embroidery—drawing to the differing levels of intricacy across each stage.
The Tight variation is inspired by hand embroidery, where artisans create intricate designs through flexibility and precision of practiced stitching.
The Moderate variation is inspired by machine embroidery, which produces consistent and precise stitching with uniform results. In Indonesia, machine embroidery is widely used across commercial industries, particularly in the production of embroidered patches for hats and jackets.
The Loose variation is inspired by computerized embroidery. Unlike hand embroidery, digitally produced stitching has limitations in thread tension, as tighter tension to produce complex techniques are more prone to thread breaking.
