Kelindan is a modular typeface for Experimental Modular Typography class. We were tasked with selecting a concept and developing a typeface based on it. My typeface is inspired by Indonesian embroidery, a practice of embellishing fabrics with a composition of threads. I was particularly interested in the structural aspect of repetition. Embroidery relies on repeated patterns and motifs and can be deconstructed to smaller, modular elements, such as motifs formed from underlying patterns. Repetition is also inherent in the stitching process itself, as individual stitches are repeated to shape it.

Looking at embroidery as an art of repetition involves repeating certain stitches, shapes, or motifs in a systematic way, and differences emerge from the progression of time, from manual embroidery to machines and then computers. I created my grid on the concept of difference in repetition by exploring repetition in patterns not as mere duplication but rather how they relate to one another in the process of variation and transformation, which gives rise to new patterns.

Overlaying the circles are the stitches representing the three main stages of Indonesian embroidery and draws from their own specific qualities.

     Hand embroidery
Hand embroidery allows artisans to showcase their creativity and skill through intricate designs and meticulous stitching.

    Machine embroidery
Machine embroidery produces consistent results, with precise stitching and uniform designs. Machine embroidery
is used across a wide range of commercial sectors in Indonesia and most notably in the production of patches in hats and jackets.

    Computer embroidery
The results of the computer embroidery are less than optimal, such as the thread attachment is not tight enough so it is easily damaged and cannot achieve complex techniques that can only be done manually.
Combining the two elements in my system, I aim to experiment with how repetition diverges and generates innovation.  Taking difference to be an extrinsic aspect in form and repetition to be intrinsic in concept creates something new within itself.
