Watery Garden

Watery Garden are compositions for my Image and Materiality class, we were assigned to create two A3 compositions that visualize our chosen word pair. The movement of plants flowing in a garden reminds alot of how water does. With this, an element that I’d like to integrate the two with is fluidity.

Sketch Development

Next, I thought about how my sketches could be visualized. Thinking about how flowers and gardens are testimonials to our own care, I wanted to incorporate a sense of human touch to the composition and so I did a mixed media exploration with Chinese ink, digital mediums, and cyanotype printing.

The first composition expresses a watery garden with varied brushstrokes and ink densities. I experimented with
the intensity of the ink by adjusting the amount of water added, resulting in a wide range of tones and shades. I transferred work into this Illustrator to work on it further. Initially, I sketched a chicken that flowed with a river, but then I thought the idea of creating a fusion animal more intriguing. This developed into a combination of birds and fishes inhabiting the scene of a watery garden.

My second exploration of a watery garden is done with cyanotype printing. Taking actual plant specimens combined with the blue hue reminiscent of tranquil water bodies. I also overlapped a layer of mesh fabric to create a ghostly effect of floating in the water.
